The Pilot Projects Experimenting the Implemention Path in Italy and Portugal

The Implementation Path presented in this web platform is the guideline followed by the Ministry of Health – Italy and the Ministry of Health – Portugal (ACSS) to improve their Health Workforce (HWF) Planning system. The two pilot projects started in the beginning of 2015 and are finishing in April ’16. They are focused on different targets:

  • for Italy the aim is to develop a planning methodology shared with the Regions and the main National stakeholders to forecast the needs of doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists and midwives in the next 25 years;
  • for Portugal the aim is to improve data collection for doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists and midwives completing their already existing public sector database with private sector data and define a forecasting method for doctors and nurses.

Based on what this two Countries already have, their specific regulated context and their health care organisation, HWF planners in Italy and Portugal have turned the recommendations and the suggestions contained in the Handbook on Health Workforce Planning Methodologies Across EU Countries into practice. In later posts we will tell about some of the most relevant aspects of our experiences.
